I had the opportunity to spend four enriching weeks with the association, working in two distinct settings.
Initially, I supported teenagers in a local school, providing them with academic guidance. Later, I joined a beauty school, where women were training for careers in the field of aesthetics.

Although I’m not an English teacher by profession — my background is in business and marketing — I was still able to contribute meaningfully by sharing my expertise with some of the women. This personal connection and knowledge exchange made the experience deeply rewarding.

I’d also like to highlight the excellent hospitality provided by the association, the well-organized weekend excursions, and the comfort of the guesthouse — all of which played a significant role in making my stay both enjoyable and memorable.

I chose the Women’s Empowerment Program because I wanted to connect with Indian girls and women — particularly those from the slums of Jaipur — and better understand their world, their lives, their challenges, and their dreams.

The two weeks I spent in the program were deeply enriching. The young women who attend the six-month course at the are trained to become dressmakers and/or beauticians. I participated in their practical sessions, offering help where needed, and also taught their English lessons.

With great dedication, the girls even gave me beauty treatments they had learned during their course — a heartwarming gesture that made me feel welcomed and valued.

Despite language barriers, we were able to share parts of our lives with one another. There was always a Hindi-English mediator available to ensure smooth communication.

One of the most unforgettable moments was when I had the honour of handing out diplomas to the girls who had completed their training. The celebrations were joyful and full of emotion — especially when the girls performed traditional Rajasthani dances during the ceremony.

This experience touched me deeply, and I would highly recommend it to anyone who wants to make a real, meaningful connection while supporting women’s growth and empowerment in India.

Spending each day in the Women’s Empowerment Program was an amazing opportunity to truly connect with Indian culture and understand the real-life challenges and aspirations of local women.

Teaching English and math became incredibly rewarding, largely due to the women’s enthusiasm and strong determination to learn and grow. Their energy made every class enjoyable and impactful.

One of the highlights was creating a First Aid box together, a small yet meaningful project that added a practical life skill to their learning. We also shared lighter moments — like playing the guitar — which brought everyone together in laughter and joy.

It was truly inspiring to witness how resilient, open, and motivated these women are. This program clearly plays a vital role in their journey of empowerment, and I feel grateful to have been a part of it.

My volunteer program lasted 4 weeks in Jaipur, India. I spent 2 weeks in the women’s support program and 2 weeks in the hospital.
Both were very enriching experiences for me.
The girls and women were incredibly open-minded and inquisitive. They were interested in and implemented everything that was offered to them. First and foremost, they want to learn English. Any form of teaching is welcome, whether role-playing, singing and translating English songs or face-to-face at the blackboard.
It was a lot of fun to see how quickly they learn.
In return, I got traditional make-up, beautiful braided hairstyles or henna tattoos on my hands and feet. It was a very warm and unforgettable time.
The work in the hospital was very touching, as people came with problems and pain and needed help.
The doctor’s idealistic commitment means that even the poor population can receive very good treatment. They couldn’t afford a normal hospital.
So they only pay a small fee and only those who can afford it pay. The doctor works on a voluntary basis.
The treatments mostly consisted of infusions, acupuncture with electrotherapy, cupping treatments, stretching and the administration of medication. The doctor also makes his own Ayurvedic medicine.
I was very impressed by his efficiency and was able to learn a lot.
As a physiotherapist, I was able to alleviate the pain in some patients.
All of this left a lasting, deep impression on me.
Perhaps it was a start for me to further projects of this kind.
I would like to thank the organization again for making this possible for me. Sukret, my local coordinator, responded immediately when there were questions or problems. They were solved immediately.
Shekhar, my driver and “bodyguard”, drove me everywhere extremely reliably, picked me up again and showed me a bit of the area.
Perhaps it is still possible to get a small handout about the work in the projects beforehand so that you can prepare better.
However, I was integrated quickly.

My accommodation at Boby Mansion Homestay was a blessing because, as a woman travelling alone, I enjoyed family contact with all the care that comes with it. I felt very safe and secure in a foreign world.

I volunteered for three weeks in August with the Women’s Empowerment Program and the School Program in Jaipur.

Spending an extended time with VWI allowed me to build meaningful connections with the women and children. Most of my time was spent teaching English, but what I appreciated most was the flexibility of the programs — allowing volunteers to contribute based on their own backgrounds and strengths.

I was able to integrate nutrition and yoga lessons into the sessions, and I’d highly encourage future volunteers to bring teaching resources, activities, or games from their home country — they’re incredibly valuable!

The homestay accommodation was truly AMAZING. The host family welcomed me as one of their own, always sharing helpful local advice and including me in authentic experiences like visiting the temple, going to the cinema, and even enjoying a local theme park!

My favorite moments were playing with the children and helping to cook traditional meals.

A Unique and Eye-Opening Experience in India

This was unlike anything I’ve ever done before. I volunteered for one week with my adult daughter, and we had a wonderful and enriching experience.

India is so vibrant, colorful, and full of life, and the women and girls we met in the program were absolutely lovely—welcoming us warmly into their group. I especially enjoyed doing henna, practicing yoga, and teaching a women’s health class (I was truly surprised by how much they were eager to learn).

The meals at the guesthouse were delicious, and the host family was friendly, warm, and accommodating. The VWI team stayed in touch via WhatsApp and were always quick to respond to our questions. While the accommodation was basic, it was clean, comfortable, and had air conditioning, which made a big difference during the hot weather.

I would absolutely recommend this program to anyone—and encourage you to embrace every opportunity that comes your way. It’s a truly immersive experience that gives you a glimpse of the real India.

Incredible Experience – Just Wish I Had More Time!

It was an incredible experience! I had so much fun with all the girls and absolutely loved my time at the school. The energy, the smiles, and the connections we made were unforgettable.

If I could change one thing, I only wish I had stayed at least 4 weeks. One or two weeks just isn’t enough time to make the kind of impact I hoped for—it flew by far too quickly!

That said, everything else was amazing, and I’m so grateful to have been part of this beautiful program.

A Life-Changing Experience!

This experience was definitely worth it. Coming from Europe, the lifestyle in India was completely different—but incredibly fascinating and enriching.

Working with the women was awesome—they were eager to learn, always smiling, and genuinely happy to spend time with us. It was truly inspiring to witness their motivation and strength.

Beyond the volunteering, I also had the chance to explore Indian culture, visiting temples and iconic cities like Delhi and Agra, where seeing the Taj Mahal was a highlight I’ll never forget.

I’m really grateful for this experience—it has changed me as a person and left me with unforgettable memories.

Enriching Cultural Exchange with Room for More Structure

My wife and I volunteered for one week with the Women Empowerment Program. Most of the women were training to become tailors, beauticians, or hairdressers, so we shared our industry experience from working in product companies within the hair and beauty sector. This allowed us to connect meaningfully with the group and offer real-world insight.

Overall, the experience was positive and deeply immersive—we truly had the chance to interact with the local community. We also supported with English and math lessons, and appreciated the program’s openness to incorporating our own skills and knowledge.

However, we would have appreciated more structured guidance from the organization about how to deliver the most impact. Having clearer direction and expectations from the beginning would help volunteers like us tailor our contributions more effectively.

The VWI staff were very welcoming and made our stay enjoyable. Our host family was wonderful—they made us feel completely at home, adding a warm, personal touch to the experience.

For anyone considering this program, we recommend discussing how your background and skills can best support the local women beforehand—this way, you can come better prepared to make a lasting difference.

Heartwarming Experience with Women and Children in Jaipur

I had an amazing time volunteering with the organization and working with the local kids and women. From day one, we were greeted with a warm and joyful welcome—the women were genuinely excited about our presence and eager to engage with us.

They were enthusiastic to learn English and math, and proud to share what they’ve learned in their beautician and stitching classes. It was truly inspiring to witness their motivation and talent firsthand.

Jaipur itself is a beautiful city full of rich culture, and the hospitality of the local people made the experience even more special. Everyone we met was incredibly kind and welcoming.

A Truly Precious Experience – Volunteering at 73!

I have visited India a few times as a tourist, but this time, I wanted something deeper—I wanted to experience everyday life in India. That’s what led me to volunteer with Volunteering With India.

At 73 years old, I was warmly welcomed by Sukret, the program manager, and I ended up spending six incredible weeks in Jaipur. I joined the Medical Program for the first two weeks, followed by four weeks in the Women’s Empowerment Program—and that’s where I truly felt I belonged. Teaching English to young girls and women gave me a powerful insight into the strength, resilience, and beauty of Indian women’s lives.

I arranged my own accommodation in Jaipur, and every day I was picked up and dropped off by the kindest and most reliable drivers, Totaram and Shekhar, who skillfully navigated Jaipur’s vibrant traffic—sometimes by car, sometimes by tuk tuk.

Rohit, the program coordinator, was always there for us—making sure we felt safe, supported, and included. Whether it was arranging sightseeing trips or helping me organize 50 samosas and sweets for my farewell party, he was always available and kind. Thank you, Rohit!

In my view, Volunteering With India is a trustworthy and caring organization that genuinely looks after its volunteers. This is especially important for young people who may be traveling alone for the first time in a new and culturally rich environment like India.

These six weeks have been a truly precious and life-enriching experience—one I will always cherish.

The Elephant Project was a highlight—I loved working alongside the mahouts and learning so much about these magnificent creatures. The Women’s Project started off a bit challenging since the women had varying skill levels, but as the days went by, it became easier and even more inspiring. And the children’s classes? Absolutely amazing! Their energy, curiosity, and joy made every moment a pure delight.

Arrival service was absolutely perfect! Sukret came to pick me up and instantly made me feel welcome and at ease. The accommodation and food with the host family were amazing—they welcomed me like part of their own family the moment I walked in. Staying with them quickly became a highlight of my entire experience. Plus, the food was always delicious and not too spicy for my taste!

The transportation service was excellent, and the taxi driver, Toto, truly became my hero—always punctual and friendly. The project staff were incredible, especially Govind, the project coordinator, who supported me at every stage. Without his help, teaching would have been so much harder.

I also feel incredibly lucky to have been here during the Diwali festival—it made my time even more special. Thank you, VWI, for everything!

Staying with the host family was absolutely brilliant—they made me feel right at home. Being part of the volunteer projects was truly amazing, as VWI is doing such meaningful and impactful work in the community. I’d easily give VWI a score of 10 out of 9!
