About the Medical Volunteer Program in India

Our Medical Volunteer Program in India is designed for international participants who want to support underprivileged communities and gain hands-on healthcare experience abroad. Based in Jaipur, Rajasthan, the program places you in rural clinics, medical camps, and urban slums where access to quality healthcare is very limited. This is one of the most impactful healthcare volunteering programs in India for pre-med students, medical trainees, nurses, and professionals alike.

Volunteers work at a busy community clinic in Jaipur where over 200 patients are treated each day. The clinic team includes a doctor, nurse, compounder, counselor, receptionist, and local volunteers. Patients — many of whom live below the poverty line — come for free check-ups, treatment of common illnesses, health counseling, and medicines that they otherwise could not afford.

Whether you’re a medical professional, student, or someone simply passionate about global health, you’ll find your role meaningful. Those with prior experience are given more clinical responsibility, while beginners work under close supervision from local doctors and staff.

What You’ll Be Doing

You’ll volunteer Monday to Friday, approximately 5 hours per day. Transportation from your accommodation to the clinic is provided daily. Your tasks may include:

  • Assisting doctors and nurses during patient check-ups
  • Supporting diagnosis and treatment of common illnesses and injuries
  • Helping distribute medicines and maintain patient records
  • Conducting basic health screenings and vitals
  • Participating in health awareness programs on hygiene, nutrition, and disease prevention
  • Providing counseling and emotional support to patients

This is your opportunity to experience India’s healthcare system up close while making a lasting impact in underserved communities.

Dr. Packer was especially kind and attentive — always taking the time to explain what was happening and answer all of my questions. He was consistently available to offer help and guidance whenever needed.

The program coordinator and driver were equally amazing — warm, friendly, and always happy to show us the beauty of their city. The Jaipur tour included in the program was a lovely bonus that added to the cultural richness of the experience.

Overall, I’d give this program a 10/10.
It was educational, well-organized, and absolutely worth it.

Pros: Learning a new culture, supportive family-like environment
Cons: None

I’d recommend this program to any traveler looking for a meaningful and memorable volunteer experience!

I truly enjoyed and learned a lot from my time with VWI. I have nothing but positive things to say about the organization. With their help, I even picked up some Hindi, which allowed me to communicate better with families — making our conversations even more engaging and rewarding. As a volunteer, I was welcomed with open arms, and it was truly an honor to build meaningful relationships with both women and children in the community.

The staff was incredibly kind and supportive. They always explained things clearly and made sure to involve me whenever there was something interesting to observe or learn. Their guidance made me feel confident and included.

I had a genuinely wonderful experience and would definitely recommend VWI to anyone looking for a volunteer program that is both impactful and heartwarming.

My daughter and I spent two incredible weeks in Jaipur volunteering with the Mobile Medical Van. The VWI team was warm and welcoming, and the work they are doing is truly commendable — offering health counseling and primary care to children in underdeveloped communities. It was both inspiring and humbling to be part of such meaningful outreach. We also had the chance to observe other impactful programs, including the Women’s Empowerment Program and the Children’s Theatre Project. I had the best time during this volunteer program! I learned so much — not only about medicine, but also about Indian culture. I had the opportunity to assist the medical staff by operating devices, measuring blood pressure, and even administering injections under supervision. The clinic team was incredibly friendly and supportive, and I felt very comfortable working in a small, collaborative environment.

A Unique and Insightful Medical Volunteering Experience in Jaipur My experience with Volunteering With India was truly unique and enriching. I highly recommend this program, especially for those looking to gain hands-on medical experience while immersing themselves in a new culture. One suggestion I would offer is to consider extending the working hours slightly for volunteers who are eager to learn and contribute more—some of us were keen to do longer shifts. That said, the exposure we received was incredibly valuable. The location in Jaipur was also a big plus....

Grateful for a Great Experience! Thank you for a wonderful experience! The guesthouse was comfortable, the food was delicious, and the support from the team was excellent. Rohit is a very competent and helpful person—he made sure everything ran smoothly. Volunteering at the clinic was truly interesting, though one week felt a bit short. I would definitely recommend future volunteers to stay for at least two weeks to make the most of the experience. It’s also a great opportunity to explore other parts of India while you're here.

I had a wonderful time in the Medical Volunteer Program in Jaipur. One of the most impactful parts of the experience was assisting in medical checkups for young individuals who had previously been working in factories and are now living, learning, and playing at the NGO center. Later, we also went into the streets to provide basic health checkups from a fully equipped mobile ambulance. It was a meaningful way to reach out to underserved communities and contribute directly. This was truly a great experience, and I would definitely recommend...

Mobile medicine is a wonderful initiative for reaching out to local communities, especially those in rural or underserved areas. During my time in the Medical Volunteer Project in India, I had the opportunity to gain a deep understanding of the local healthcare challenges and how they affect everyday life.

The Medical Program with Volunteering With India is truly an incredible adventure. Operating from a mobile bus-ambulance, we assisted the dedicated medical and pharmacy staff of NGO in reaching rural communities around Jaipur—areas that would otherwise have little to no access to proper healthcare. But despite this, I found myself surrounded by a wonderful and supportive team. They patiently taught me how to recognize common Indian medications,...
